The Minnesota State University Student Association (MSUSA) established the Penny Fellowship program in 1987. Named in honor of Timothy J. Penny, a former MSUSA officer and U.S. congressman, The Penny Fellowship awards stipends of up to $2,500 to Minnesota State Colleges and Universities students participating in service-related internships.

While representing the voters of Minnesota's first congressional district from 1982 to 1994, Penny was a strong advocate for students and public service.

The following goals define the intended outcomes of the Penny Fellowship program:

  • To enhance the quality of the post secondary educational experience with community and public service involvement, and
  • To encourage the commitment of highly qualified leaders to community and public service.

These goals are embodied in the Fellowship's primary function, which is to provide financial assistance to students performing low or no-pay community and public service internships that foster civic responsibility and leadership qualities.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Students enrolled full- or part-time at a Minnesota community college, state university, or technical college are eligible to apply.
  2. The student must have secured a low paying or voluntary internship in a public service or nonprofit organization.
  3. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Deadline: May 1, 2006
