Underrepresented Student Retention Initiative

For underrepresented and at-risk students, the adjustment to college may be difficult. Unfortunately for some students, the decision to leave school is made before steps can be taken to engage and retain them in the campus community. Minnesota State Colleges and Universities realizes the value of diverse perspectives within the campus community and wants every student to have opportunities to thrive and succeed.

The Underrepresented Student Retention Initiative was created to improve the recruitment and retention of students attending Minnesota State University, Mankato, or Minnesota State University Moorhead. With an emphasis on strengthening foundation skills, the Corrick Center at Minnesota State University Moorhead provides students with extensive tutorial assistance in mathematics, reading and writing.

The Peer Tutoring, Counseling, and Learning Communities project at Minnesota State University, Mankato, uses peer tutors, student leadership and ethnic organizations to motivate student learning and improve retention among underrepresented and at-risk students. Taking a communal approach, the project coordinates faculty and professional staff to ensure students' academic strengths and weaknesses are identified and incorporated into their individual learning plans.
